Description
1972 Buick LeSabre Custom Convertible
A traditional Buick styling cue dating to 1949 is a series of three or four vents on the front fender behind the front wheels. The source of this design feature was a custom car of Buick stylist Ned Nickles, which in addition had a flashing light within each hole each synchronized with a specific spark plug simulating the flames from the exhaust stack of a fighter airplane. Combined with the bombsight mascot, (introduced in 1946), VentiPorts put the driver at the controls of an imaginary fighter airplane. The flashing light feature was not used by Buick in production, but VentiPorts remained as nonfunctional ornamentation. They were called VentiPorts because the 1949 sales brochure noted that VentiPorts helped ventilate the engine compartment to minimize the engine overheating. The suggestion was made that they allowed air flow out of the engine bay. Air entered from the grill into the engine bay and was pressurized by the radiator fan and exited through the VentiPorts. The benefit might have been true in early 1949, but sometime during the model year they became plugged.

For consignment, a 1972 version of the LeSabre and in convertible form. This old gal has some rusting going on with the body steel, a slightly ragged convertible top, and a completely unrestored engine bay. A barn find which will need some TLC.
Exterior
Steel panels have suffered the test of time in that they show with plenty of surface rust underlying the Fire Red exterior paint. Particularly on the door panels and rear quarter panels there is severe invasive rust. The white canvas convertible top will need to be replaced as currently it is missing the rear window. Chrome trimmings are showing some pitting and beginnings of rusting of the plating. 15-inch Buick rally wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Opening the doors white vinyl and white molded plastic make up the door panels. It is appearing very dirty on these door panels. The bench seats are covered with multiple fabrics and vinyl sleeves for the backs of the front bench. An original dash is upfront and like the remainder of the car very dirty and in need of TLC. Another white vinyl bench resides in the back of the car and due to the rear window of the convertible being missing and some water damage has crept in. Black carpeting floods the floors.
Drivetrain
Within the engine bay a very dusty and dirty 350ci V8 resides. There is a single 2-barrel carburetor on top. A TH350 3-speed automatic on back, and a 10-bolt 3.08 rear axle.
Undercarriage
An extensive coating of surface rust is noted on the entire undercarriage. A new fuel tank has been installed and is like new. All else is coated with surface rust and some invasive rust is noted at various points on the rockers and the exhaust system is rusted out.
Drive-Ability
This car started with some coaxing, idled fairly smoothly and our test drive was limited due to the brakes being non operational.
A definite large early 1970's project car in definite need of a caring owner or Buick aficionado.
